UEA and Numbers
The value of facts and figures lies solely in the use we put them to. Whilst UEA collects data in order to make statutory returns where it is required to do so, which is in turn used by newspapers to create their annual league tables, we can also use that information in other ways that directly benefit the University. Such data, for example, ensures that the management of UEA can maintain an accurate picture of the University’s profile, can identify performance against goals that the University has set itself, and benchmark itself against the performance of similar institutions. An analysis of facts and figures is also a means to identify significant long term trends, a process which allows the University’s management to plan ahead.
A sophisticated understanding of UEA’s performance is also important in a world of league tables. Such tables are now part of most areas of the public and quasi public service, and cannot be ignored. In the case of universities there are numerous league tables published annually that rank institutions against a range of indicators believed by a particular publication to be of interest or use to its readers (e.g. The Times Good University Guide). UEA takes a keen interest in the ways in which different tables are calculated, both to understand our ranking, and to be in a position to comment in an informed and sensible manner if a particular table fails to reflect fully a particular nuance of the University. This website provides UEA with an important forum to draw all of this information together for the benefit of the University as whole, and new material is being collected all the time.
