MA in Philosophy and Literature

The MA in Philosophy & Literature offers an interdisciplinary study of two subjects that are deeply interlinked. It is ideal as a supplement to an undergraduate programme in Philosophy or a literary subject, or as a preparation for research in either field.

Students take one core module, Advanced Themes in Philosophy and Literature, and two from a choice of three: European Philosophy, Truth and Illusion in Art or Critical Theories of the Western Self. You then choose one further option module, from a list of relevant M-level modules on offer in the School of Philosophy or the School of Literature and Creative Writing. The research skills module called Philosophy Postgraduate Research Training Workshop (10 credits) is designed to nurture your endeavours towards independent research and develop your academic and professional skills.

After Easter you attend the 6-week module 'Research and Methodology seminar (with dissertation plan)' in the School of Literature and Creative Writing to support your first steps towards to the full time work on the dissertation (12,000-15,000 words) over the summer period. You undertake the research and writing on this project, under the guidance of a supervisor, from May to September.

The course is studied over 12 months full time, or two years part time.
