Summer School Success
On the 2nd-4th July, year 12 students joined us at the joint Chemistry and Pharmacy Summer School for an insight into studying these subjects at degree level. Over the two day event the students were given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities; from experiments in biochemistry and nanotechnology to tablet production and testing, and were able to experience our teaching methods with problem based learning around patient scenarios. Brand new this year they were also given the option to try our new Pharmacology session and to explore the variety of cutting edge research being undertaken in both departments chatting with our postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and members of faculty about their research.
During their stay students had a taster of life at university, staying on campus in our new student accommodation, socialising and competing with some of our current undergraduate students during the quiz and curry night! After an interesting couple of days finding out more about the undergraduate courses on offer, and getting friendly advice from our current students and academics, the students left with a clearer idea of what they want to do in the future and what it’s like to study Pharmacy at UEA.
Students said ‘loved the summer school, I enjoyed the practicals and the information provided.’, ‘overall very helpful and informative for getting a feel for each degree course.’ ‘I enjoyed having the variety of sessions each day.’ ‘it was interesting to get an insight into what learning science at university is like.’ ‘gave a good insight into what it was like to study chemistry or pharmacy at UEA and further helped my decision to apply for pharmacy’ ‘Thank you for the experience.’
