Susan Barker graduated with a B.Pharm. (First Class Honours) from Bath University, completed her pre-registration year in industrial and community pharmacy, then graduated with a Ph.D. in liposome technology from London University. She spent nine years working in the Formulation and Process Development department of Merck, Sharp and Dohme (a major research-based international pharmaceutical company) in various positions of increasing responsibility. She then opted for a career change and returned to academia, initially as a Lecturer in Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy, Queen's University Belfast and is now Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy, University of East Anglia. Her teaching responsibilities cover the areas of formulation science, drug delivery technologies, analytical science and pharmacokinetics.
Susan's main research interests are in the area of drug delivery technologies, with a view of improving delivery of "difficult" molecules through biological membranes and barriers. Recent projects have examined the delivery of drugs through cystic fibrosis sputum. Currently, she is interested in the general area of ocular drug delivery, co-supervising two PhD projects with Dr Julie Sanderson. Additionally, she has a long-held interest in novel analytical techniques as applied to pharmaceutical systems. Current projects include the development of thermally-stimulated current spectroscopy as an analytical tool. She has collaborative projects in the areas of physical characterisation of pharmaceutical formulations with several members of CHE and PHA faculty, looking at various techniques such as muon spectroscopy to study liposomes and dielectric spectroscopy to study water behaviour in food and pharmaceutical materials.
