- Have you practised as a midwife for a minimum of 2 years?
- Has your midwifery registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council recently lapsed? (up to 6 years)
- Does returning to Midwifery attract you?
Module Overview:
This programme provides the practice and theoretical experiences enabling re-registration with the NMC upon your successful completion. A structured timetable prepares you for placement where you can develop your skills and gain confidence under the direction of your mentors. Placements comprise Community Midwifery Teams, Midwifery-led Birthing Units in some Trusts, Central Delivery Suite and Antenatal and Postnatal Services. In all areas you will encounter a full range of interdisciplinary / inter-agency practice. A wide range of innovative learning approaches in School will enable you to apply theory to practice, working alongside your peers.
Key Learning Outcomes:
- Provide safe care which meets the NMC requirements for competent midwifery practice
- Practice in accordance with current policies, national frameworks and standards which apply to maternity care
- Apply current evidence in the conduct of your practice
- Calculate and administer medications in accordance with standards and legislation
- Provide midwifery care in a sensitive , respectful and compassionate manner taking account of individual circumstances of the woman and her family
- Practice in accordance with current aims and standards for maximising health.
Delivery Modes:
The course is delivered at UEA via workshops, scenario based learning, simulation, lectures, seminars, presentations alongside electronic-learning opportunities. Your practice learning takes place in a Maternity Unit within your locality working under the supervision of a qualified Midwife. A midwifery mentor will support you in practice and also assess your progress and conduct your summative (required) assessments.
Expected Learning Hours:
These vary to some degree depending upon how long you have been out of practice. Below is a set of hours for a student who has been out of practice for 3 years.
Contact hours – 72 hours
Personal study hours – 72 hours
Practice hours - 450hrs (depending on experience and how long since you practiced).
Assessment Strategy:
3000 word assignment linked to a personal case
Achievement of Practice learning outcomes in order to meet NMC requirements for registration along with a practice portfolio
Fees:
Fees currently paid by the Strategic Health Authority - £1,200 if self-funded
