UEA School of Music ensembles

dvorak rehearsalUEA Symphony Orchestra rehearses every Wednesday during semester and performs either alone or with UEA Choir at least three times a year. Past projects have included orchestral workshops, a performance of Sibelius Symphony No.2 led by Sir Colin Davis - principal conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra - and a tour to Graz in Austria. The University Orchestra is conducted by Director of Music, Sharon Choa.

UEA Choir enjoys membership from students from all departments of the university and UEA staff as well as members of the public. The choir rehearses under conductor Tom Primrose on Monday evenings during the autumn and spring semesters. Recent performances by the choir include Britten's St Nicolas and Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms at St Andrew's Hall and Norwich Cathedral.

UEA Chamber Choir is directed by Dr Alan Howard (MUS) and specialises in the performance of unaccompanied choral repertoire both sacred and secular, ranging from early music to contemporary styles. The choir is made up of staff, students and alumni of the University, without regard to subject area (currently just under half of its 30 members are drawn from MUS).

Newly formed in 2011, the UEA Duke Ellington Orchestra will give its first performance in the Autumn concert season. The jazz ensemble will be open to all students in the university and also to our previous students and associated musicians.  Using transcriptions of original Ellington recordings, it is intended, as far as is practical, to recreate the instrumentation, techniques and sound of the Ellington orchestra.

All UEA ensembles are open, by audition, to all UEA students and staff, as well as members of the public. For more information, please email: musicevents@uea.ac.uk
