The School of Mathematics has strong research groups in Applied Mathematics (fluid dynamics; mechanics of solids; geophysical fluid dynamics; scientific computing) and in Pure Mathematics (group theory; representation theory; number theory; combinatorics; model theory; set theory and ergodic theory).
- More than 90 percent of the research activity submitted by the School to RAE 2008 was classified as being at least internationally recognised in standing, with approximately 55 percent being world leading or internationally excellent.
- Strong research links and co-operation with mathematicians in the rest of Europe, Israel, Russia, the United States and Australia.
- Specialised library housed in a graduate common room and a well-equipped computing laboratory.
- Regular seminars are held in both Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics.
