SEA v3.1: Major updates

This page is intended for those that have used previous versions of SEA and wish to know what differences to expect with version 3.1. Only brief details are given on this page, with in-depth descriptions described in the much updated user guide. Click here to install SEA v3.1.

1. Added biharmonic mixing scheme (-Dbiharmonic):

   • In addition to the standard Laplacian operator, biharmonic terms can be included as well or instead of. This option requires "am_bi" and "ah_bi" to be set (in ocean.in). To switch off Laplacian operator, simply set "am" and "ah" to zero.

2. Added module to accumulate diagnostics for time averaging (-Ddiags_time):

   • Three subroutines have been added to the src/diags.F module to provide time averaged diagnostics: init_time_diags, accum_time_diags and write_time_diags.
   • Diagnostics are accumulated for the duration of a run and written out at the end into sub-files according to the current process configuration.
     ./diags/model/d999999.# (where # is the process number)
   • A post-diag utility permits these files to be post processed, with each variable being collected into a full array and written out to a separate file, suffixed by its diagnostic id.
     ./diags/d999999.ufm.# (where # is the diagnostic id)

3. Miscellaneous changes and additions:

   • Changed src/step.F to calculate two outer halos before sending, when running in parallel mode, using "nhalo" to determine whether 1 or 2 halos should be exchanged. Thus, less #ifdef coding required for clinic/tracer parts.

   • Bug fixed in src/options.F (illegal internal write statements).

   • Bug fixed in src/spi.F (invalid request parameter in call to MPI_Send in routine SPI_Token_Send).

   • Removed file utils/io_dac.F, as the routines are no longer required (since i/o is now performed in horizontal plane, not east-west slabs).

   • Optimised clinic and tracer, by splitting loops over k into smaller segments and using scalars for multiple array references.
