Biography

Jonathan Tang BSc. MSc. FIBMS

Jonathan Tang graduated from Biomedical Science at the Liverpool John Moores University with BSc (hons). He undertook training to become HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in the Biochemistry Department of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital while completing his Master degree at the Manchester Metropolitan University. During the ten years working in a busy NHS hospital laboratory he specialised in the analytical technique of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the analysis of drugs and proteins. He was responsible for the introduction and expansion of the liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) laboratory. During his time at Liverpool he introduced a number of routine assays including urine drugs of abuse, immunosuppressants, vitamin D and steroid hormones. In 2004 he obtained fellowship from the Institute of Biomedical Science and was promoted to senior section manager of the LC-MS/MS laboratory.

In 2011 Jon took up the role as the Bioanalytical facility manager at the University of East Anglia. Working closely with Professor Bill Fraser, he established a multidisciplinary, CPA accredited facility within the university environment while working collaboratively with Norfolk and Norwich University NHS hospital to form a unique Supra regional assay and advisory service (SAAS), providing an analytical service for bone and calcium homeostasis related markers. His current research focuses on the development of LC-MS/MS techniques to measure vitamin D metabolites (1, 25 dihydroxy vitamin D and 24, 25 dihydroxy vitamin D) and the study of their relationships in health and in disease.
