Biography

I have been a Consultant Cardiologist at the James Paget University Hospital in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, UK since 2011. I am a cardiovascular epidemiologist at UEA, and am working on inequalities in heart disease care in the older patient. I am Lead for Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation for the East of England.

I was previously a Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology and Epidemiology at University College London from 2009 to 2011. I trained as a doctor at University College London Medical School, qualifying in 1997. After junior doctor jobs at the Royal Free, Kings College and Royal Brompton Hospitals, I became a Specialist Registrar on the training scheme in Cardiology based at Cambridge University Teaching Hospitals in 2002. I then took a research sabbatical to train in cardiovascular epidemiology, completed an MSc in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and read for my PhD in the department of Epidemiology and Public Health at University College London with support from the British Heart Foundation between 2005 and 2008 (supervisors Harry Hemingway and Adam Timmis). This was a prognostic multi-variate regression analysis looking at ethnic differences in prognosis of coronary disease in three cohorts. I then became a Clinical Lecturer at UCL in 2009 during which I which I received the Berkeley fellowship for a six-month research fellowship at The George Institute for Global Health in Sydney in 2010.

My research focuses broadly on social inequalities in heart disease prevalence, care and outcomes, both in the UK where I am working on the effects of older age on heart attack care and outcomes having previously worked on ethnic inequalities at UCL, and in the developing world where I work on socioeconomic inequality. In Sydney I worked on the distribution of heart disease in rural India and on global patterns of hospitalisation in diabetics. I have also published on the effects of rural-urban migration on angina in Peru with colleagues at LSHTM and on compliance to statin treatment in China with colleagues at UEA and Peking University/George Institute China.

I teach both cardiology and epidemiology. I regularly give BMJ Master classes over video-link to doctors in South Asia, as well as UK-based lectures for BMJ Masterclasses in Cardiology. I am also an international health advisor and teacher to the Royal College of Physicians, having single-handedly designed and delivered a 2 week course to doctors at Lagos University Teaching Hospital in September 2013. I am module leader for the non-communicable diseases course at peoples-uni.com, an on-line university that teaches public health science to students in developing countries at low cost, and am involved in voluntary clinical, research and training work in a rural hospital on the outskirts of Kolkata, India.
