Biography

I have background on public health medicine, health statistics, and health services research. After my undergraduate training on public health medicine in Wuhan China (1978-1983), my postgraduate research (1983-1986) focused on effects of socio-demographic and behavioural factors on health. During my PhD study in Leeds (1988-1991), I developed a stochastic simulation model to estimate future demands for doctors. In 1992 I joined Effective Healthcare Bulletin Team in Leeds and then in York to evaluate effectiveness of a wide range of health care interventions. Since then I have been conducting systematic reviews and modelling for health technology assessment, and research synthesis related methods in York (1993-2000), Birmingham (2000-2003), and Norwich (from 10/2003). My research interest also includes primary research on health care interventions and health services research.

Key research interests

  • Evidence-based medicine research; systematic reviews, meta-analysis and modelling for evaluating a wide range of health care interventions.
  • Methodological research concerning evidence-based medicine and evidence synthesis, including  publication and related biases, assessment of non-randomised studies, indirect treatment comparison, network meta-analysis, and evaluation of complex healthcare interventions.
  • Primary research on public health interventions, health services research, the control of chronic conditions, disability and rehabilitation, smoking cessation and tobacco control.

PhD Student Supervision

Welcome enquires about PhD study opportunities (by email: fujian.song@uea.ac.uk) from UK and international students. Research topics suitable for PhD studies under my supervision include: (1) Research synthesis methodology: for example, research quality and dissemination, publication biases; network meta-analysis; simulation modelling, and quality of medical research in developed and developing countries. (2) Health services research, global health and control of chronic conditions: for example, control of hypertension, disability and rehabilitation in older people, tobacco control and smoking cessation. (3) Other evidence-based medicine and health services research topics may also be considered.
