My main areas of work have involved evidence based mental health, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions in dementia. I have developed areas of dementia health service research in primary care, care homes and acute hospital settings.
Current research themes are focused on enhancing care for patients with established with dementia and improving early intervention and prevention strategies. My research work is currently funded by the National Institute of Health Research.

I spent 6 years researching trauma/personality assessments and treatment and psychometric assessment development with the Ministry of Defence. Then I went into the NHS and undertook and MD on anger characterisation in elderly mentally ill.
In the last 10 years I undertook 2 Cochrane reviews in dementia. In 2004 I set UK/US collaborations with colleagues which are ongoing. We have jointly co-developed work on the harms of screening, medication trials in dementia, collaborative care in dementia and the anticholinergic burden scale.
I worked as a consultant for 9 years and developed an applied research strategy. I am presently working on funded projects on collaborative care in dementia, screening in dementia, inpatient rehabilitation in dementia and assistive technology in dementia.

My research interests cover a wide range from bioscience through epidemiology, psychological interventions and health services research. My main areas of work have involved evidence based mental health, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions in dementia, collaborative projects in neurology and UK/US studies in dementia; both interventions and outcome research at the interface of primary and secondary care. I have been involved in 7 clinical trials of investigational medicinal products as lead and co-investigator.
Currently I am pursuing a research strategy of novel medication usage for dementia, health service research in the UK and USA in dementia and protection of cognition in vulnerable hospitalised elders.
I am one of the Dementia Research Directors in the UK for DeNDRoN.
Internationally I have links with the Das Deutsche Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen DZNE which has led to publications and projects
I have had a collaboration with the Indiana University Center for Aging Research since 2004 which has led to research bids and the collaboration has supported my interest in implementation research.
I am involved in the NIHR Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care led by Cambridge.
