Biography

After my PhD, I joined Ashbourne Biosciences in Reading for a short period before moving to a Postdoctoral Fellow position in 1997 in the Hugh Sinclair Human Nutrition Group at the University of Reading. I moved up through the ranks at Reading, being appointed to an academic post in 2001 and to Reader in Integrative Nutrition position in 2005. In 2008-2009 I was co-founder and appointed as Deputy Director of The Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health in Reading. Following a nine month stay as Associate Professor of Physiology at the University of Auckland, NZ, I was appointed to my current position as Professor of Nutrigenetics at UEA, which is predominately a research focussed role at the University, but also involves a contribution to the Nutrition training of our medical students, a role which I thoroughly enjoy.

Academic Background

Professional Qualifications and professional memberships

Key Research Interests

  • Nutrigenetics
  • Dietary fat composition and the cardiovascular disease (CVD) phenotype, in particular lipoprotein metabolism, vascular function and inflammation
  • Long chain n-3 PUFA and CVD and cognitive health
  • Diet and cognitive performance
  • Aetiology of the association between the APOE4 genotype and chronic disease risk
  • Green tea catechins

I am head of the Nutrigenetics group within the Dept of Nutrition with ongoing activities including

  • Investigation of genetic determinants the responsiveness to long chain n-3 PUFA intervention in adults, including the FINGEN RCT (in collaboration with Williams and Madden (Reading), Calder and Miles (Southampton), and Lietz and Mathers (Newcastle))
  • Dose-response investigation of the impact of flavonoid-rich and flavonoid-poor fruits and vegetables on cardiovascular and cognitive health- the FLAVURS RCT (in collaboration with Lovegrove, Spencer, Kennedy and Gordon (Reading))
  • Investigation of the impact of APOE genotype on the responsiveness to dietary fat manipulation- the Satgene RCT (in collaboration with Lovegrove and Jackson (Reading))
  • Dairy product composition, adiposity, appetite and satiety (in collaboration with Given, Reynolds and Yaqoob (Reading))
  • APOE genotype and inflammation (ongoing collaboration, with Rimbach and his research group at the University of Kiel (Germany))
  • Long chain n-3 PUFA and vascular function
  • NU-AGE project (EU FP7), in collaboration with Cassidy and Fairweather-Tait at UEA ,and other NU-AGE European Partners. Large Pan-European consortium investigating the impact if dietary change on the inflammatory phenotype in older adults (n=1200)(2010-2016)
  • Genetic determinants of dietary flavonoids metabolism
  • Diet composition and cognitive performance and age-related cognitive decline

Techniques

A large proportion of our research involves human intervention trials conducted at the Clinical Trials and Research Unit. In addition we employ a variety of molecular techniques, including cell culture, EMSA, Westernblotting, PCR, immunohistochemistry etc to investigate underlying physiological and molecular mechanisms.
