The diversification of traditional care provision has seen the opening of GP led Walk-In Centres, the new 111 service, Minor Injury Units and Urgent Care Centres, many of which are nurse led. Other practitioners such as paramedics are increasingly expected to be able to reduce hospital admissions and need to develop enhanced skills in clinical assessment. It is therefore essential that to be in a position to deliver safe, high quality care to those who need it, professionals need to have robust clinical, theoretical and experiential preparation. This module aims to meet the learning needs and prepare practitioners to practice at an advanced level and to become lifelong learners in order to be able to provide safe, effective and evidence based care in a variety of settings.

What will I learn?

  1. Develop communication and consultation skills and apply relevant theory to practice. 
  2. Recognise ethical and legal issues which have implications for first contact practice whilst ensuring safe and effective holistic research-based care. 
  3. Identify an area/s of the students own clinical practice where the student can begin to move the boundaries of their own practice whilst ensuring safe and effective holistic research- based care.
  4. Demonstrate application of in-depth knowledge of pertinent anatomy and physiology to the presenting illness 
  5. Critically evaluate a range of assessment strategies in order to decide upon the most appropriate care of the client. 
  6. Interpretation of a full blood count, liver function tests and urea and electrolytes and act upon these accordingly.
  7. To enable the student to initiate and contribute to strategies designed to promote and improve health and monitor disease in individuals, using a wide range of skills e.g. decision making, patient education, health promotion and assessment. 
  8. Use decision-making skills to promote the well being of the patient or client and to refer on where appropriate. 
  9. To follow prescribing conventions for patients who require medication following the guidelines for supply of medicines under PGD / independent & supplementary prescribing whilst providing skilled medication education  
  10. To reflect on course learning and implications for professional practice.
