Why study Medicine at Norwich, UEA?

The Medical Degree programme at UEA is one of the newest in the UK with the first cohort of students graduating in 2007. The curriculum is innovative and exciting. Clinical placements take place from year 1 onwards and one day per week is spent in Primary Care throughout the course so that what is learnt in theory is applied to real patients in the same week.

The main learning method is Problem Based Learning with an emphasis on working in small groups to apply what is learnt to patient scenarios but there are also lectures, seminars and on-line materials to support the learning. All of the clinical placements occur in our NHS partners within East Anglia apart from the elective period in 4th year when students can go anywhere in the world.

All students undertake Studies Outside of Medicine in year 4 and all are required to undertake a Clinical Audit project during year 4 for submission in year 5. There are opportunities to intercalate for a Master’s in Research degree at the end of year 4.

Because we are part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences there is a compulsory Interprofessional Learning component during which medical students carry out case studies with students from the other health professions including nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and pharmacy.

Medical degree students are drawn equally from school-leavers and mature students. The latter may be either graduates (any subject considered) or have done a recognised Access to Medicine course. The only absolute requirement for entry is an A level in Biology or an equivalent qualification.

We also run postgraduate courses. The Doctorate in Clinical Psychology qualifies the successful graduate to practise as a Clinical Psychologist. The course combines work place based learning with academic days at the University. There are a number of Master’s courses run in conjunction with the other schools in the Faculty of Health.
