Career summary

After my PhD, I took up a postdoctoral position at the prestigious Max-Planck-Institute for Biology Tübingen.  In 1995 I was appointed as Research Group Leader in Infection Biology in the Department of Parasitolgy at the University of Heidelberg.  During that time I completed my Habilitation in Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medicine and was awarded the venia legendi in Biochemistry and the title “Privatdozent”, which is equivalent to assistant/associate professor.  In 2001 I took up a Lectureship in Parasitology in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Bristol.  Since 2004 I am Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and Genetics in the School of Medicine, Health Policy and Practice at the University of East Anglia.

Key Research Interests

My main research interest is the causative agent of human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness, Trypanosoma brucei.  Especially, I am interested in the iron metabolism of bloodstream forms of T. brucei, in the anti-trypanosomal activities of cysteine proteinase, proteasome and topoisomerase inhibitors, and in the diagnosis of the sleeping sickness by PCR tests.
