Activities in international public health and health policies

Since 1998, I have received funding from and undertaken consultancies for a variety of international agencies, including the World Health Organization, the European Commission, the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Open Society Institute (OSI), the German Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), the German Kreditanstalt fuer Wiederaufbau (KfW), and have worked as advisor to the Ministries of Health of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria and Uzbekistan, in tuberculosis control and public health.

Rapporteur, WHO Regional Advisers Meeting & Strategic Technical Advisory Group (STAG), Stop TB Department, Geneva, Switzerland, June 2004

I am a reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals, including Bulletin of the World Health Organization, European Journal of Public Health, BMC International Health and Human Rights, Public Health.

Key Research Interests

My research is in the areas of health services and public health, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. My main research interests are in access to health care, inequalities in health and quality of care. Prior to joining the UEA, I was clinical research fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, based at the European Centre on Health of Societies in Transition (ECOHOST), working on a multi-institutional project on tuberculosis in the Russian Federation, which was funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). My PhD research at the University of Warwick was funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and explored the impact of health care reforms in Bulgaria on the provision of and access to children’s health services and quality of care.

At the UEA, my recent research projects include:

Health Care Needs Assessment for Children and Young People with Complex Needs in Thetford; Funder: NHS Norfolk; 05/2009-09/2010; (Principal Investigator). This project is based in Thetford, a town in the East of England with high levels of socio-economic deprivation and a high proportion of migrant workers. We are undertaking a health care needs assessment for services for children with physical and mental disabilities and long-term conditions, and conducting qualitative research on access to health services for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, in particular immigrant children.

Community Health Needs Assessment for Thetford Healthy Town; Funder: NHS Norfolk; 05/2009-06/2010; (Principal Investigator). This project is part of the Healthy Towns initiative funded by the UK Department of Health, aiming to test community based interventions to promote healthy diet and physical activity.

Epidemiological Needs Assessment of Smoking in Norfolk; Funder: NHS Norfolk; 02/2010-04/2010; (Co-Investigator). This survey aims to estimate the prevalence of smoking in Norfolk.

Scoping research on the economic crisis and its impact on communicable disease transmission in the European Union; Funder: European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC); 08/2009-11/2009; (Co-Investigator). This project aims to assess the potential impact of the current economic crisis on the spread and control of communicable diseases in the EU.
