Biography

I received a BEng(Hons) degree in Microelectronics and Computer Engineering from Staffordshire University (UK) and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Kent (UK). Following my PhD, I worked as a Research Associate in an INTERREG IIIA project in the Department of Electronics at the University of Kent, and after that in industry at Intracom Telecom (Greece). I became a member of the Renewable Energy Systems Laboratory at the Technological Educational Institute of Patras, Greece (now T.E.I. of Western Greece) as a Research Associate and then as a Senior Research Fellow and was involved in several European Research projects,including FP6 and LEAD ERA -FP7 projects, in the areas of solar radiation intensity prediction, integration of RES in buildings, nanotechnology-based innovative solutions for improving the performance of photovoltaic modules and the energy efficiency of buildings, and c-Si PV degradation and diagnostics. I taught at undergraduate and MSc level the course on RES particularly in relation to solar energy and PV systems.

I joined the University of East Anglia in September 2015.

Key Research Interests

My current research activities are focused in the following areas:

  • PV temperature prediction in various field conditions in free standing and BIPV systems incorporating the effect of wind velocity and wind incidence angle.
  • PV cell and module degradation, detection and diagnostics, non-destructive testing techniques including I-V, IR thermography and Electroluminescence, and image processing in monitoring the evolution of defects.
  • optimum sizing of stand-alone PV and hybrid PV+Wind systems, and dynamic load management for Intelligent Energy Buildings (I.E.B.)
  • daily and hourly global solar radiation prediction models
  • nanocoatings with antireflective and self-cleaning properties applied on PV glass, and coatings with spectral selective properties for windows in Zero Energy Buildings (Z.E.B.) - optical properties, energy performance and efficiency.
