National Student Survey 2010
The University of East Anglia is joint third mainstream English university for overall student satisfaction in the 2010 National Student Satisfaction Survey.
The University’s students have placed it in the top five for overall student satisfaction every year since the survey began, six years ago.
“This is a most pleasing result and a resounding vote of confidence from our students. The outcome reflects the fact that we continue to listen to our students and to do our utmost to deliver an excellent education to them,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Edward Acton.
In addition to its strong overall place, the University has the top-ranked School of Pharmacy in the country with 99% overall satisfaction; its School of Political, Social and International Studies was top in the country for overall satisfaction for Media Studies and joint top for Sociology, with 100% satisfaction scores in both.
The School of Allied Health Professions was joint top in the country for overall satisfaction for its Occupational Therapy course and joint first for satisfaction with teaching in Physiotherapy (98%) and Speech and Language Therapy (97%).
Drama and Psychology at the University both came out top in the country for satisfaction with teaching, with scores of 99% and 96%.
Who’s who at the top?
When looking at any league table, it is always worth bearing in mind that not all institutions offer the same experience to students. The full ‘satisfaction’ table of English HE providers includes a number of specialist institutions, offering only music or art history, for example, as opposed to the full spectrum of courses offered by a mainstream university; the University of Buckingham is a private institution and students do not ‘attend’ the Open University in the same way that they live and study at University of East Anglia and similar institutions.

National Student Survey 2009
Students ranked the university joint third among mainstream universities in the country for student satisfaction.
The University’s overall satisfaction score of 90% was bettered only by Cambridge and Leicester Universities among large English institutions in the survey, which also included smaller colleges and specialist institutions.
The School of Pharmacy received a ringing endorsement from its students. Its 100% satisfaction rating placed it top in the UK, a remarkable achievement as the school only opened in 2003.
Courses in Archaeology and Physical Sciences also topped the national listings, as did the innovative programme in Society, Culture and Media which was ranked first among all Sociology-related subjects in the UK. Speech & Language Therapy, Geology, History, Environmental Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Drama, Mathematics & Statistics and Molecular Biology all scored 100% satisfaction across a number of measures in the subject-specific assessments.

National Student Survey 2008
Student satisfaction figures for 2008 showed that the University of East Anglia was bettered only by Cambridge and was on a par with Oxford, among mainstream English universities.
For the fourth year in succession – ever since the National Student Survey began – students gave their UEA courses a ringing endorsement, but 2008’s 92% overall satisfaction figure was the university’s best ever result.
UEA’s Drama students were the most satisfied in the UK, while Pharmacy and Psychology students place their courses joint top.
Teaching staff were singled out for high praise in a number of departments. One hundred per cent of Politics and American Studies students and 99% of Medics said their teachers were particularly good at explaining their subject.
UEA’s scores are significantly above the national average in all categories:

National Student Survey 2006
The University of East Anglia was ranked joint first for student satisfaction among mainstream English universities.
The second National Student Survey showed that the university improved on its excellent result of last year in five of the six categories measured by the survey.
UEA also topped the rankings for larger institutions for the rate of return for the survey, with 74 per cent of its eligible students taking part.
National Student Survey 2005
The first ever National Student Survey showed that levels of satisfaction with the courses taught at UEA were among the highest in the country.
Only two mainstream universities ranked higher than UEA for overall satisfaction and only three were thought by their students to have better learning resources.
This is the first time that students have been asked for their views about the sector in this way and they gave a ringing endorsement of the quality of UEA’s staff, teaching and student support.
The survey was undertaken in January 2005 by undergraduate final year students across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
