Students to take part in speed interviews

Thu, 7 Mar 2013

To mark the launch of its new Summer Internship Programme, the University of East Anglia's Internship team is hosting a speed interview and networking event on March 11.

Second (or penultimate) year undergraduates and host companies will be matched for speed interviews, where students will aim to impress potential hosts within a 10-minute time frame - refining their interview, presentation and communication skills.

The interviews will also enable time-pressed employers to speak with a wide range of potential interns within a short two-hour period.

The afternoon will also include a networking session from 2-2.45pm, giving students the opportunity to talk face-to-face with potential employers, gain valuable insights into their preferred industry or sector and explore ideas about future careers.

Companies involved in the event this year include the Government Procurement Service, Fugro, Aldeburgh Music, Clays Ltd and Larking Gowen.

Graham Harris of Clickers Archery Ltd, which is hoping to recruit a marketing intern, said: “At Clickers Archery we believe in opportunity, and this unique event represents a great opportunity for both us and the student. We see it as a real win-win situation and are looking forward to gaining a quality intern from the recruitment process.”

Dr Robert Posey, lab manager at Food Forensics Ltd based at Norwich Research Park, said: “A UEA Summer Internship is the perfect opportunity for Food Forensics to give a young developing scientist invaluable experience within a high throughput forensic laboratory.”

Ecological consultancy Torc Ecology Ltd is also keen to take part in the Summer Intership Programme, having had a positive experience with UEA’s Evolve Graduate Internship Programme two years ago.

Director Louise Brown commented: “The process is simple, the paperwork minimal and there is good support from UEA in finding the best candidate for the internship. As a small company, this scheme proves not only to be cost-effective but allows us to engage with potential future employees. We would not hesitate to recommend this programme to other small companies.”

Julie Schofield, student enterprise and employability development manager at UEA, said: “This event will give students a great opportunity to network with local employers, hone their interview skills and above all, sell themselves! In the current climate, experience in the workplace is more important than ever and internships are a fantastic way for students to boost their employability over the summer period.”

The Summer Internship Programme gives second (or penultimate) year UEA undergraduates the opportunity to secure paid work full-time or part-time with an employer for between four and eight weeks during July and August. Typical activities include marketing, research, social media, IT, project management, events, PR, carbon reduction projects or lab support.

The programmes involve minimal paperwork on the part of the employer and no PAYE administration.
