Lecture series tackles economic issues

Health service reforms and banking risks are among the subjects to be tackled during a public lecture series starting next week at the University of East Anglia

The series is organised by the School of Economics and brings together academics and practitioners dealing with economic questions related to current, real-life developments. 

Organiser Dr Liliana Harding said: “The talks will allow the audience to engage with the university and visiting academics, as well as with successful alumni and representatives of the business and public sectors. The aim of the series is to make economics more relevant to the real world.” 

The first of the Contemporary Economic Issues lectures takes place on Monday, January 28, and will see Dr Alper Kara from the University of Hull speaking on financial innovation and banking risks.

On February 4, Prof Stephen Davies from UEA will ask whether there is sufficient competition in Britain, while on February 11 Dr Tatiana Damjanovic from the University of Exeter will talk on financial frictions and monetary economics.

Dr Farasat Bokhari from UEA will speak about NHS reforms and hospital competition on February 18, and on February 25 Prof Diane Coyle of the University of Oxford will discuss GDP measurement and values.

The economics of the sex industry will be the subject of a lecture from UEA’s Dr Peter Moffatt on March 4, while Dr Mihai Mutascu, from the West University of Timisoara, looks at new determinants of collected tax revenue.

The series finishes on March 18, with Dr Hershbinder Mann of the UK Data Service speaking about key resources for social scientists.

All lectures are free to attend and take place from 6pm in Arts lecture theatre 01.02, UEA, Norwich.
