University of East Anglia challenges film-makers to 'Make a Music Video in 50 Hours'

Mon, 24 Sep 2012

Regional film makers have just two weeks left to rise to an 'against the clock' challenge set by the University of East Anglia as part of this year’s Norwich Sound & Vision festival.

The university’s school of Film and Television Studies is challenging budding directors to produce a music video from scratch during the 50 hours of the annual music and film conference.

Tracks provided by up-and-coming bands and artists will be made available to production teams on the first day of the festival – Thursday, October 11. The teams will then have just 50 hours to plan, film, edit and present a completely new music video.

Several budding directors have already accepted the creative challenge, but new entrants can still apply until Friday, October 5.

The event will culminate in a special screening and prize ceremony on the evening of Saturday, October 13, in St Margaret’s church on St Benedict’s Street, Norwich.

The 2012 Norwich Sound & Vision Festival is on track to be the biggest yet, with conference sessions and gigs through the three-day event.

‘Make a Music Video in 50 Hours’ is a new strand developed for 2012, which is expected to draw entries from new and experienced production teams, and encourage emerging artists and professionals to produce exciting new creative work against the clock.

Dr Brett Mills, head of UEA’s school of Film and Television Studies, said: “This is an exciting challenge for local and regional teams to demonstrate their creativity under pressure – we can’t wait to see what combination of sound and vision the teams come up with. It’s another great element to add to the festival and continues our work with local communities and regional art events.”

Festival director Adrian Cooke said: “This looks set to be another exciting addition to Sound & Vision 2012, and is a great example of how our collaboration with the school of Film and Television at UEA is expanding the scope of the festival. We aim to bring musicians and filmmakers together in various ways, and this is an excellent opportunity for them to explore how sound and vision work closely together.”

UEA’s school of Film & Television Studies is one of the UK’s oldest and leading centres of film and television studies. It supports and provides activities for local, regional and national festivals and events - from the Aldeburgh Documentary Festival to London’s Turkish Film Festival. This is the second year that the school has been involved with Norwich Sound & Vision, having organised several film panel events at the 2011 conference.

Members of production teams should be over 18, and have access to their own film and video production equipment. Some editing facilities will be made available via the Norwich Arts Centre.

Production teams or individuals can to take part in the challenge by filling in the application form at: http://bit.ly/PePIpc.

Completed forms should be emailed to keith.johnston@uea.ac.uk by Friday, October 5.
