Funding available to kick-start museum careers

Mon, 10 Dec 2012

People looking to begin a career in the museum sector are being given the chance to have their course fees paid at the University of East Anglia.

UEA’s School of Art History and World Art Studies is offering four museum internships for the MA Museum Studies postgraduate degree and an additional two school-sponsored scholarships.

The internships cover course fees at the home student rate, and also provide a bursary of approximately £5,000.

Interns become members of a department in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, where they contribute to the team’s day-to-day work.

One internship is available in each of the following areas, assigned as part of the interview and selection process: curatorial, collections management, education and marketing/public services.

Two school-sponsored scholarships covering fees are also available for study on any of ART’s MA degrees from September 2013.

The MA in Museum Studies combines the cutting-edge research and curatorial experience of academic staff in the school with the professional resources and experience of the Sainsbury Centre. It also draws on museum resources in London and in the region, notably the Norfolk Museums Service, and incorporates a number of museum visits and expert speakers.

Course director Dr Christina Riggs said: “We work closely with museums throughout the region to give our students a range of workplace opportunities alongside their classroom-based studies. This means that students graduate with not just a top-notch academic degree, but also a professional portfolio of hands-on museum experience.

“Throughout the year, students spend at least one day a week - and often more - working in award-winning museums like the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in Cambridge, and the Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth.”

The closing date for September 2013 admission applications for all of the school's programmes is March 1, 2013. Visit www.uea.ac.uk/art/pgtfunding for further details.
