Every year we run the John Dryden Translation Competition in the School.
Entrants submit an unpublished translation into English, and translations are sent in from both beginning and well-known translators. Winning entries are published in the journal of the British Comparative Literature Association.

John Dryden Translation Competition Internship Programme
The School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing and the British Comparative Literature Association (BCLA) are pleased to offer an internship for a Literary Translation PhD student to work with the Organiser of the John Dryden Translation Competition.
The John Dryden Translation Competition is an international competition for literary translations into English from any language and genre. As an intern, you will be supervised by Professor Jean Boase-Beier, who runs the competition on behalf of the BCLA and the School. You will be asked to contribute an average of 2 hours per week, but the distribution of these hours will vary because of competition deadlines. Most of the competition work is needed between January and March, with some further work in June and July. For the rest of the year there is very little to do.
Tasks include receiving entries (usually in January and early February),keeping careful note of details, contacting readers, distributing entries to them and maintaining the long-list of possible candidates for judging. In return, you will receive on average two hours per month of mentorship, you will be involved in the process of reading and sifting entries, you will receive a small honorarium (provided by the BCLA) of £200, and you will be able to attend the prize-giving event in July and meet the winners. You will also, if possible, be provided with a desk and computer, as well as storage space, in a shared room in the School. The internship can be renewed after the first year, up to a maximum of two years.
