Biography

I joined UEA in 2012, after three years teaching at Université Paris VII – Denis Diderot. My main interests are in philosophical poetics, and in particular in the ways that philosophical thinking can inform our understanding of poetry as an art medium. I completed my PhD at Cambridge, on Poetry and Poetics in the work of Martin Heidegger. This has now been revised as Sounding/Silence: Martin Heidegger at the Limits of Poetics (Fordham UP, 2013); my second monograph, On Voice in Poetry: The Work of Animation appeared two years later. I am currently working on three projects: a book on the poetry of WS Graham; a short study on surfaces; and a cultural archaeology of privacy.

Key Research Interests

The central concern of my work thus far has been with how ‘philosophical’ thinking can illuminate our understanding of the technical specificity of art media, and in particular the linguistic medium of poetry. I have written on various topics in poetics and continental philosophy, especially the work of Martin Heidegger, on lyric poets including Keats, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Hopkins, and W. S. Graham, and on contemporary poetry.
