Biography
Valerie Henitiuk researches in the areas of World Literature, Translation Studies and Women’s Writing, with particular interests in such topics as East/West cultural exchange, gendered translation, translation vs. adaptation, the history and reception of translation, and liminality. She completed her PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Alberta (Canada) in 2005, writing a dissertation on liminal metaphors in women’s writing in English, French and Japanese. Prior to taking up this post at the UEA in March 2007, she was conducting postdoctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, in the Centre for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University (USA).

Valerie Henitiuk's research focuses primarily on Translation Studies, World Literature, Women's Writing, Metaphor, and Japanese Literature. Dr. Henitiuk’s work has been published in journals such as the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature, Comparative Literature Studies, META, Translation Studies, and TTR, and in collected volumes such as Romantic Border Crossings (Ashgate 2008), Teaching World Literature (MLA 2009), Thinking through Translation with Metaphors (St Jerome 2010), and Translating Women (University of Ottawa Press 2011). Embodied Boundaries, on liminal metaphor in women’s writing in English, French and Japanese, was published in 2007, and One Step toward the Sun: Short Stories by Women from Orissa in 2010; another monograph, titled Worlding Sei Shônagon: The Pillow Book in Translation is forthcoming from University of Ottawa Press. She is editor of In Other Words: the journal for literary translators, and on the editorial board of a new transdisciplinary journal titled translation. Current projects include a volume of critical essays on the work of W.G. Sebald (currently under review) and a new monograph with a working title of Translated Readers: How World Literature Happens.
She would be happy to supervise postdoctoral research in such areas as Translation, World Literature, Comparative Literature, Women’s Writing, Metaphor, Liminality, Adaptation, and East-West Cultural Contact.

External Activities and Indicators of Esteem
- Valerie Henitiuk gave the keynote lecture at the Monash University Literary Translation Festival (Melbourne, Feb. 2011), and the Nida Lecture in Translation Studies at the SBL International Meeting (King’s College London, UK, forthcoming in July 2011). Since 2007, She has given guest lectures at Beijing Foreign Studies University; Harvard University; Kent State University; National Taiwan Normal University; Newcastle University; Nottingham University, Ningbo; Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts (UEA); University of Manchester; University of Salford; University of Warwick; and University of Western Sydney.
- Other activities include consultancies for the Arts Council of England, the British Council in Egypt, and the publisher Penguin China to develop literary translator training and networking programmes internationally.
- Major awards include the Kokugakuin University Visiting Researcher Prize (2002-3), the Izaak Walton Killam Scholarship and the Dorothy J. Killam Memorial Prize (2003), the Governor-General’s Gold Medal (2005), the inaugural SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Prize (2005), and a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2010-11).
- In 2010-11, she is a Visiting Scholar in Comparative Literature at Harvard University.
