Biography
Valerie Henitiuk researches in the areas of World Literature, Translation Studies and Women’s Writing, with particular interests in such topics as East/West cultural exchange, gendered translation, translation vs. adaptation, the history and reception of translation, and liminality. She completed her PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of Alberta (Canada) in 2005, writing a dissertation on liminal metaphors in women’s writing in English, French and Japanese. Prior to taking up this post at the UEA in March 2007, she was conducting postdoctoral research, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, in the Centre for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University (USA).
Key Research Interests
I am currently finalizing a book titled Worlding Sei Shônagon, 1875 to the Present, which offers annotated translations into many Western languages of a single passage from the Pillow Book of Sei Shônagon, for which I have a letter of interest from University of Ottawa Press. I am also co-editing a collection of essays on the work of W.G. Sebald. Further, I have also made some progress on another monograph, concerning the circulation from the national literature context to world literature, with a focus on East/West cultural exchange and the historical context of translations of Classical Japanese literature. Several articles, mostly related to the topic of this third book, are in the pipeline.
My main research areas focus on various aspects of Translation and World Literature,especially issues of gender, women's writing, east/west cultural contact, reception, history, liminality, and translation process. I have also begun a couple of joint projects with colleagues at other institutions, in the areas of sacred text translation and the divergent cultures of translation (e.g. individual vs. collaborative work). I would be interested in supervising doctoral students in any of the above areas.
