Biography
I came to UEA in September 2000. Between 1996 and 2000 I was a lecturer in English at the University of Aberdeen; before that, between 1993 and 1995 I was a research fellow at Magdalen College Oxford. I did my DPhil, 'The Crisis of Eloquence: Reading and Writing English Newsbooks 1641-1649' (1994) in Oxford, my BA in the School of English and American Studies at the University of East Anglia. I was born and went to school in Cardiff.
Key Research Interests
I am interested in literature and politics in early-modern Britain, especially Milton and Marvell, and in cheap (popular?) print, pamphleteering, the book trade, and the history of newspapers from the seventeenth century onwards. I am keen to develop work on Britain in its European context. Having just completed Milton’s Angels: The Early-Modern Imagination (OUP, 2010), and the edited volume The Oxford History of Popular Print Culture, vol. 1: Cheap Print in Britain and Ireland to 1660 (OUP, 2010) and being on the verge of completing a collection of essays entitled Conversations with Angels: Essays towards a History of Spiritual Communication, 1100-1700 for Palgrave … I am now beginning to edit Milton’s 1650s Latin Defences for the new Oxford Complete Works of John Milton. The edition will situate them in their international political contexts, and show the interaction of English polemic and neo-Latin writing.
