Summative coursework is required to be submitted for marking which will count towards your module and degree results. You may submit your coursework on paper at your Hub or you may be able to submit online depending on the type of work undertaken. Make sure you are aware of the rules regarding coursework submission (see below) as penalties will be applied for missed deadlines etc.
Formative coursework is marked but does not contribute to your degree result. The majority of formative work will be submitted in class but you may also be asked to submit through your Hub. You will be advised of the deadlines for formative work by your Module Organiser and/or in your module outlines.
Submission Regulations and Guidelines
Before submitting any type of work you should ensure you know the rules for each assignment and how to submit your work correctly. The Student guide to coursework submission and return outlines all you need to know regarding submission of your work, including:
- Word count/limits (the policy on word count has changed recently - read full details here)
- Penalties for late submission
- Electronic submission
- Extensions
Process of Submitting Work
REMEMBER:
- 3pm is the deadline for submission, not the submission time for your work. You can submit work for up to a week before the submission deadline. You are advised not to wait right up until the deadline in case you have problems uploading
your work or, for paper submission, have any issues getting to your Hub on the day. - If you submit any work after the deadline (i.e. 3:01pm) you will be required to submit an extension request form. There will be no exceptions to this, all Hubs will request this.
- It is your responsibility to submit the correct version of your work. If you make a mistake and upload the wrong file, you can upload the correct file anytime UP TO THE DEADLINE; this replaces the file you previously uploaded. After the deadline has passed, further versions cannot be accepted.
You can view details of assessments for the modules you are taking in your e:Vision including the type of submission required for each piece of assessment e.g. online or paper copy. The document Submission of work for assessment using e:Vision contains a full guide on how to use e:Vision to submit work electronically or to download and print a coversheet for paper submission. All coursework must be submitted by 3pm on the deadline day whether in electronic or paper format.
Electronic submission - You will be able to submit coursework electronically from one week before the deadline using the link from your e:Vision page. Late assessments must also be submitted electronically. Work uploaded after 3pm on the deadline day will incur a late penalty unless you have an approved extension, so ensure you upload your work in good time in case you encounter any problems.
Paper submission - For a small number of modules, you won’t be able to submit electronically due to the nature of the work. This will be stated on your e:Vision record. You will submit your work through dropboxes in your Hub. NSC students should submit work directly to the Hub Reception. Dropboxes will close at the 3pm deadline and late work should be handed to Hub staff who will provide a receipt showing the date and time of the submission. Late submission will incur a penalty unless you have an approved extension so make sure you know where your dropbox is ahead of time.
If you have any queries about submitting your work, the FAQs for Coursework Submission may be able to help. If you are still having difficulty, please speak to your Hub.
Coversheets
All coursework should be submitted with a coversheet whether you submit electronically or on paper. The coversheet will include a variety of information such as a barcode unique to your module, your student number, the Hub managing the module and the full module assessment details.
For electronic submission, a coversheet will automatically be attached to your work.
For paper submission you can download and print a coversheet for each individual piece of work from your e:Vision. This should be stapled to your work before submitting it in the dropbox.
If you are entitled to a Specific Learning Difficulty sticker, you will need to collect these in advance from the Dean of Students office and attach the sticker to your work. Virtual stickers can be applied to electronic submissions. For more details see the guidance Sticker System for Students with a Specific Learning Disability
There are sections on the coversheet that you must fill in:
- The marker’s name - if requested by your lecturer
- Seminar leader’s name - if you are submitting for a module in Arts & Humanities
- Word Count - ensure your word count is included and correct
- SpLD sticker - if appropriate, apply your Specific Learning Difficulty sticker or e-sticker.
If you have a genuine reason for an extension to a deadline for a piece of work, you should submit a request before the deadline to your Hub, using an Extension Request Form accompanied by appropriate evidence.
If you are unable to apply for an extension before the deadline you should submit your work as soon as possible along with a completed Extension Request Form.
