Assessment

AssessmentsAssessment is the process by which academic work is marked and overall progress monitored. This section of the website outlines the regulations and procedures you will need to know in relation to both coursework and examinations.

Formative and Summative Assessment
During your studies you may encounter both formative and summative assessments. Summative assessment is a piece of work or exam for which the outcome will contribute to the final mark given for a module. Formative Assessment is a piece of work or course test which does not contribute to the final mark for a module but on which you receive feedback.

Types of Assessment
There are many different types of assessment which you may encounter during your studies. Most assessment falls into two broad categories, coursework or exams.

  • Coursework normally takes place during your study for each module and can take many forms e.g. an essay, practical report, laboratory notebook, poster, portfolio, blog article, case study, research project plan, data output, dissertation or a timed, written test. It can also include oral and group presentations.
  • Exams for most modules take place during the university exam period in April/May/June each year and involve answering questions within a specified time period. Depending on your course and type of study, you may also have exams at other times during the year and may have course tests during your studies to assess how you are progressing.

The type of assessments you will undertake for each Module are shown in your e:Vision under Assessment Submission
