Biography

Gabrina Pounds studied German Language and Linguistics at the University of East Anglia. After finishing her degree she had two children (1989 and 1990) and was employed as an Associate Tutor of Italian at the same university. In 1996 she began her PhD study in Linguistics on a part-time basis, while continuing to teach Italian and some Linguistics at UEA. In 2001 she was appointed to the full-time position of Director of Language Resources at UEA and was responsible for the running of the University-wide Language Programme (ULP). She completed her PhD in 2003 with a thesis focusing on the expression of attitude in Letters to the Editor in English and Italian. In 2005 her appointment was confirmed and she has since been working as ATR Lecturer B and Senior Lecturer (since 2014), teaching a number of modules in Applied Linguistics (discourse analysis, pragmatics and socio-linguistics) and producing research in the area of discourse analysis, particularly expression of emotion and attitude. She is currently Co-Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies.

Key Research Interests

Application of Systemic Functional Linguistics (particularly Appraisal Theory and related approaches) to the analysis of attitudinal expression and subjectivity in a variety of discourse contexts (e.g.: news discourse, advertising, clinical discourse) and considering patterns of cross-cultural variation (Britain/ Italy). Work in progress focuses on the expression of empathy in doctor-patient interaction and other professional contexts.

Discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, pragmatics.

MA: The Power of Discourse: Ideology and Textual Interaction.

External Activities and Indicators of Esteem

  • Providing an educational service to the local community by overseeing the evening class language programme and organising bespoke language courses for members of the public and local companies. (2001-2014)

  • Contributing (workshop and general support) to the two Norwich City of Interculture events in the Forum in Norwich, organized by LCS (2011 and 2013)

  • Engaging formally with local patient groups (Public and Patient Involvement in Research groups) to elicit views in support of the drafting of research projects relating to empathy and patient care. (2013 and 2014)
  • Eliciting support from Research Director of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust and from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch to support the drafting a research project aimed at optimising ambulance service providers’ communication practice (2014-2016).
  • Engaging with Norfolk Constabulary to: a) gain feedback on police interview practice to inform my research and impact activities and b) obtain access to 999 call recordings for analysis and development of targeted communication training for 999 call handlers (ongoing).
  • Engaging with College of Policing to get support for the research outlined above (2017)
