Venue: UEA Drama Studio

Beaumarchais's Le Mariage de Figaro, on which Mozart based his opera, was written 5 years before the French Revolution. Count Almaviva now regrets the promise he made to his Rosine on marrying her in the prequel, The Barber of Seville, to renounce that sign of feudal and gendered power, the droit de seigneur, because he fancies Suzanne, fiancée of his valet Figaro. His one-track attempts to realise his desires come up against a combination of the spurned Countess's anger and the quick thinking of the arch-improviser Figaro and his resourceful wife-to-be, plus the unexpected discovery of a long-lost mother. Social and gender politics crackle through Beaumarchais's brilliant dialogue and visual imagination, aided by plenty of coups de théâtre. This production is set in the 1920s and underpinned for the second year running by former members of Norwich musical sensation The Oily Rag Band, led by NUCA Professor of Animation Suzy Hanna, who bring together Beaumarchais, Mozart and early jazz.
The production is in French: a synopsis in English will be available.
