UEA is developing a centre of excellence in Japanese studies with the highest quality interdisciplinary research on Japan in Norwich. Thanks the establishment of the Yakult lectureship in Japanese language, the UEA has recently added Japanese to all its distinctive language degrees. Students interested in studying about Japan can access the wide range of expertise about Japan across the University and in the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures.

This means that the following degrees are now available:

  • Translation, Media and Japanese
  • Modern Languages (Japanese)
  • Japanese, Film and Television
  • Japanese and International Development Studies
  • Japanese and Management Studies
  • Translation and Interpreting (Japanese and French or Spanish)

Also available in combination with either post-A level French or Spanish as follows:

  • Translation, Media and Japanese and French or Spanish
  • Modern Languages (Japanese and French or Spanish).

Intensive language study is provided in years 1 and 2 followed by a third year abroad spent in Japan. For 2011 entry, the Japanese language entry point level will be either beginners’ or post-GCSE or equivalent.  From 2012 we shall also be accepting students with A-level Japanese
