Please explain how your career has developed since graduating.
After graduating from UEA, I moved to France and became an in-house translator at CG Traduction et Interprétation.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your current role?
The variety of texts I'm able to translate.

What steps did you take in finding employment (e.g. careers centre, job websites, networking events)?
All the steps possible: careers centre, job websites, networking events, friends, etc.

What are the key skills you learnt at UEA?
Listening, understanding and questioning.

How have they made a difference in your career?
It is extremely important for a translator to understand and question things. Being able to listen is very useful when it comes to dealing with client issues and organising team members.

What piece of advice do you wish you'd received before you graduated?
I received some excellent advice from Roger Baines in LLT, he told me to "never give up!".

Do you have any tips for current students or recent graduates?
"Never give up!"

If you use languages in your job, how do you use them and what do you use them for?
I use French and English on a daily basis in everything I do, be it at work or during my spare time.

What is the professional and personal value you place on being able to speak a language other than English?
Being able to speak a language other than English opens your mind and allows you to see, understand and appreciate things which may once have gone unnoticed.

Can you provide a short description of an incident from your time at UEA, your year abroad or your professional life which stands out (language related or not)?
It was while studying French and translation at UEA that I developed a love for world cinema and black and white film photography.
I have since gone on to watch more films than I care to remember and exhibit my black and white photographs in France.
