UPDATE: We have secured an excellent line up of speakers for this event, full details of their biographies are provided below. If you sign up to attend you will have the chance to meet with them and talk one-to-one about how they made the transition from UEA into a wide variety of graduate career areas - which draw on their language skills - including: publishing, media and communications, corporate banking, not for profit (NGOs), research analysis. As well as providing you with insights into what's possible with your degree, these contacts may prove useful to you in your quest for work experience/ employment.

How would you like to start your Easter break with a free trip to London by coach?

The UEA's School of Languages and Communication Studies and the School of Political, Social and International Studies is arranging an event at UEA London where you will be able to:

  • Hear career presentations from alumni about their career paths to date - which will inform and inspire your thinking about the various careers sectors available and your next steps towards graduate employment
  • Enjoy a networking lunch, speaking informally to alumni, students and staff of both Schools and making important contacts which could benefit you in the future
  • Engage in one-to-one advice sessions with those graduates who represent your particular career interests and who can advise you on how to prepare
  • Spend the evening (up to about 10pm) in London and enjoy the city before heading back to UEA on a late coach

There are limited places for this event. Please register your interest by signing up online. 
To avoid disappointment for those with a firm interest, please only sign up if you fully intend to come.

To confirm a place, you will be required to pay a fully refundable deposit of £10 to secure your seat on the trip.

Travel details:
Coach will depart at 9am from UEA

Coach will depart from London at 10pm and arrive at UEA at approximately midnight

I graduated in 1989 with a 2.1 in Politics (Maj) and History (Minor). I have worked in a variety of communications roles for various government agencies and the private sector. The Parliamentary Internship I did was very valuable in developing my career.

Sarah Canavan, Client Service Manager – Benelux, JPMorgan
Studied Translation and Interpreting (French & German) at UEA, followed by a Masters.  I am now an Assistant Vice President at JPMorgan, looking after the banking relationships for Financial Institutions in Benelux.

Ian McKenzie, Director of Communications – The People's Pledge
I graduated from UEA in 1983 with a BA (First Class) in Philosophy and Politics and in 1990 with an MPhil in Philosophy. I spent 15 years working as a Special Adviser for two Cabinet Ministers, Ann Taylor MP and Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott MP. Since then, I have worked in public affairs and political communications. I was the Labour side Press Officer on the 2011 national No2AV referendum campaign.

Katerina Tornari, Account Director - CNN International
UEA French and Management graduate. CNN International advertising sales deliver innovative and creative media solutions that go beyond the norms of standard advertising to deliver results. The team strives to build long-term strategic partnerships with all clients.

Kay Spragg, Senior Editor - Oxford University Press
I finished my degree in Media and French in 1998 and ended up in educational publishing, as a Junior Editor for Longman (Pearson Education). I've worked for a few different companies since but I'm still working in publishing and very much enjoying it.

Tim Wales,  Head of Library - London Business School
Graduated with a BA (Hons) French with Business Studies from UEA in 1996. His first graduate job was as a trade journalist in Lowestoft. He completed an MSc in Information Science at City University in 1999 to become a professional academic librarian.

Lee Webster, Policy and Advocacy Manager - Womankind Worldwide
Studied Comparative Literature and French at UEA. Lee works in women's human rights in the international development sector, lobbying UK government on its policy affecting women living in conflict.  She has over ten years experience in advocacy and campaigning on a variety of rights and equality issues.

Claire Wright, Head of Analysis - Lloyd's List Intelligence
Claire heads up the analysis team. Her expertise lies in shipping, energy and trade analysis.  She speaks regularly at industry events and writes for shipping daily newspaper Lloyd's List.  She started her career at Danish shipping giant AP Moller.
