LCIC to operate regional low carbon fund

The University of East Anglia (UEA) has been granted the role of Fund Operator for the multi-million pound, European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)-supported regional low carbon venture capital fund - one of the key projects being developed through the 2007-13 ERDF Competitiveness Programme in the East of England. Delivery of the fund will be managed and overseen by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).

UEA’s Low Carbon Innovation Centre (LCIC), will operate the fund on behalf of the university. The fund will be available for applications in early 2010.  This prestigious contract builds on the LCIC’s highly successful £4.8M Carbon Connections programme.

The venture capital equity investment fund will target investments in SMEs in the low carbon field within the EEDA region.  The total project size is expected to be in the region of  £20M, comprised of £8M from ERDF with additional funds being sought from other VC sources.

The procurement of a Fund Manager is currently underway and is now closed for applications.  Potential businesses who may be seeking investments may send contact details to: enquiries@lowcarbonfund.co.uk and further information will be provided when it comes available, likely not to be until early 2010. More information will be available at www.lowcarboninnovationcentre.com

Dr Chris Harrison, Chief Executive of the Low Carbon Innovation Centre said:"We are delighted to have been given this opportunity by EEDA. We are looking forward to utilising our experiences in running the Carbon Connections programme and links that we have established to the low carbon investment community and regional companies seeking capital for growth and development of new low carbon goods and services. The appointment further enhances UEAs position as an exemplar organisation for stimulating low carbon economic growth through teaching, research and commercial activities."

EEDA will also provide regular updates on the development of the fund at http://www.eeda.org.uk/4045.asp
