a brief explanation of how your authority can meet carbon emissions national indicator targets.

The Earth's climate is changing because of our use of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitting fuels. We need to cut our emissions of CO2 by 60% to stop the worst effects. The solution rests in our hands. We can do this together.

Each year, about nine tonnes of CO2 is released for every person in the UK - enough to fill five hot air balloons! To make this 60% cut, each of us needs to lose the equivalent of three hot air balloons every year. The Community Carbon Reduction Programme, CRed, aims to achieve this by 2025.

CRed is part of the Adapt Low Carbon Group and aims encourage individuals and businesses to take practical action to reduce their carbon footprint. Over the past five years, CRed has developed expertise in carbon footprinting and evaluation, carbon management and public engagement programmes through working with businesses and organisations to help them achieve their carbon saving ambitions. CRed also provides regular feedback to policy makers at all levels of government on the barriers to public engagement in mitigating climate change.

Our client base ranges across the corporate and public sectors. We have delivered a wide range of services such as engagement programmes using our pledge system whereby individuals are encouraged to make small but increasingly challenging lifestyle changes which, when added up, make a big difference. Other projects include carbon life-cycle analysis, carbon footprinting of organisations and supply chains and independent evaluation of greenhouse gas emission reduction of products and energy saving programmes including the effectiveness of low carbon technologies and services. Drawing on a wealth of experience at the University and access to the latest climate change research, CRed offers clients practical solutions to their climate change challenges by developing tailor-made programmes for organisations or, depending on requirements, using elements of our 'off the shelf' service.
