Michael joined UEA Law School in September 2002, and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2008. Graduating from Cardiff Law School in 1995, he spent a year working in parliamentary research in London before returning to take up a scholarship at Cardiff Law School to pursue postgraduate studies. In 1998, he took up a lectureship at University of Wales Swansea which he held up until the time of his appointment here. His doctoral thesis, which he completed in 2002, was entitled, 'A rights-based approach to utility regulation'. His other research interests include judicial review (in particular, the effect of the Human Rights Act 1998) and, generally, aspects of regulation.
Michael is a member of the UEA Centre for Competition Policy and is a specialist contributing editor for Sweet and Maxwell's Encyclopedia of Competition Law.
He teaches on the Constitutional and Administrative Law course at year one and the optional Competition and Administrative Law courses. He is interested in supervising research students in all areas of competition law, but in particular merger law and public enforcement. Michael would also welcome approaches by students wishing to undertake research in the regulation of the media and aspects of administrative law.
