Wireless Networking

Between 2005 and 2010 the University deployed an enterprise level wireless solution from Trapeze Networks. Currently there are 690 mobility (access) points installed in Norwich with a further 31 at our London Study Centre. This solution has been deployed across most University Buildings as detailed below.

Please note the following 'mission statement' style objective for the wireless network:

The wireless network at the University of East Anglia is designed to provide easy, low bandwidth access from personally managed equipment for lightweight applications such as web browsing (incl. library journals) and email. It is not intended for serving information on to the network, high volume data transfers (including mounting of filestore), mission critical interactive sessions (such as server administration. modelling simulations), access to University resources (other than those publicly available ) or highly time-bonded applications such as media streaming.

What you need to use a wireless network

To access either the BT Openzone or the eduroam wireless networks you will need a computer, PDA or mobile phone with a Wi-Fi certified card installed which complies with the 802.11a, 802.11g and/or 802.11n(5GHz only) standard.

Wireless Networks

The University runs the following global wireless networks (SSIDs) with the following characteristics:

  • eduroam (part of the JANET Roaming Service - JRS)

Availability: available across all transmitters in Norwich and London

This is the preferred wireless network for those attending or visiting the university from an eduroam site - it is an encrypted wireless network using the WPA/WPA2 protocol. Details of how to set up your equipment to use this network is available via the Help Desk helpsheets. This system requires your initial connection to be authenticated before you can proceed and use the Internet.  Performance is rate-limited to 8Mbit/s per device.

  • eduroam-setup

Availability: available across all transmitters in Norwich

This wireless network has a single web page for users to be able to download and run the eduroam setup tools we've created.  It is designed to minimise the process in getting devices on-line.

  • BTOpenzone

Availability: available across all transmitters in Norwich

This is the commercial WiFi Zone network available as a pay-to-use network for non-eduroam visitors, members of the public and conference delegates at the University and covers areas such as the Sainsbury Centre and Broadview Lodge. More details about how to use the service can be found on the BT OpenZone website.   Performance is rate-limited to 8Mbit/s overall due to the nature of the Internet connection this uses.

  • UEA

Availability: available across all non-residential transmitters in Norwich

This is a legacy unencrypted wireless network requiring only that the network card is registered at first use during the academic year. This network has since been superseded by the eduroam network but has been be left in place in non-residential areas to provide service consistency and access for those using legacy equipment which is unable to support the eduroam encrypted protocols - until such time as a switch off timeframe is agreed.  Wireless areas are currently set up in the same fashion as desktop systems in as much as you need to register your wireless network card.   Performance is rate-limited to 2Mbit/s per device.
    •  For UEA managed devices
this is undertaken via your departmental IT support staff.
    •  For personally owned equipment
you need to go to a wireless enabled area and go through the on-line registration procedure the first time you connect. This is the same process as used in the student residences (RESNET), i.e. the NetReg system, and more details of how this works and some Frequently Asked Questions are available in that section of the website.

  • UEA-LDN

    Availability:
available across all transmitters in London

This is a development wireless network for evaluating the provision of secure wireless services to UEA owned equipment.  This is not for direct customer use, but rather is provided for centrally programmed equipment to use as part of the investigation and development of secure wireless services.

  • voice and Wlanphone

Availability: available across all transmitters in Norwich (Wlanphone limited to ITCS)

This is a development wireless network for the delivery of voice services via wireless, rather than DECT transmitters.  It is not intended for direct customer use, but rather is provided for centrally programmed equipment to use as part of the investigation and development of cordless voice services.

The central solution also enables the following services:

  • INTOLondonCentre

Availability: available across all transmitters in London

This is a private wireless network for INTO use which links onto a separate Internet connection.  This is not for general use - access is at the discretion of INTO.

  • uueas

    Availability:
available across all transmitters in Union House, Norwich

This is a private wireless network for student union use which links onto a separate Internet connection.  This is not for general use - access is at the discretion of the Union of UEA Students.

Health and Safety

There is little reason to be concerned about health issues in respect of wireless networks and the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA) do not consider there to be a problem with the safety of WLAN. Although such equipment may well be used over an extended period, the power output of equipment is low, about one tenth that of a mobile phone handset, and it is not generally placed immediately adjacent to ones body. It is recommended that laptop computers are not placed on the users lap whilst in use.

Location tracking

Users of the wireless network should be aware that in order to enforce the Conditions of Computer Use, the University can and may use the wireless technology to triangulate the physical location of those breaching the conditions.
