Copyright is the right to exploit exclusively an intellectual property existing in tangible form, and to control its exploitation by others. In the first instance the copyright owner is the creator or author of an intellectual property. Copyrights are of finite duration. UK legislation also recognises moral rights in intellectual property.
Copyright protects:
- original literary, dramatic, and musical works, and the typographical arrangement in published editions of them
- artistic works
- sound recordings, films and videos, broadcasts, and cable programmes
- computer programs and software
- websites
