Theses

Copyright in a thesis is owned by its author, the student, unless it has been assigned under a formal agreement.

UEA theses and other theses held permanently - A single copy may be made by the user solely for private study and research. No more than 5% of the entire work should be copied. Multiple copies of extracts from UEA research degrees can be made for teaching or research at UEA provided that the author has signed the authority on the higher degree entry form. The terms and conditions are as for the current CLA licence.

Extra-Mural Requests for copies of theses must always be handled with caution. In particular a check must be made that the thesis is not under embargo. A copy of the thesis in its entirety, or a substantial part of it should never be supplied without the copyright owner's written consent in advance. Copies should only be supplied for private study and research unless, again, the copyright owner's permission has been given.

The making and supply by Library staff of copies of theses is subject to the following conditions, which can usefully adopted by staff in Schools as well:

  • the thesis had not been published before deposit in the University Library
  • copying has not been prohibited by the copyright owner
  • the person requesting the copy has formally declared that the copy will only be used for private study and research
  • only a single copy is supplied
  • payment sufficient to cover the cost of production of the copy is made.

Copying from theses supplied to UEA through Inter-Library Loan - Single copies of extracts not exceeding 10% of the entire work in total can be made by readers solely for their own private study or non-commercial research. This includes microfilm copies loaned by The British Library.
