Images; Slide collections

Slides, photocopies, and other reproductions of artistic works are widely used as teaching aids. (If you are in doubt as to what is meant by the term 'artistic work' refer to the Definitions page). These images are subject to copyright protection. Logos and trademarks are protected under the same legislation; do not copy them without establishing the legal position first.

Private study and research

This includes copying images for incorporation into a thesis or for individual project work but does not cover course work generally. Copying includes photocopying, photography, and scanning. In the case of a scanned image the file must not be networked or otherwise be accessible to other people; do not retain the file longer than is necessary for private study or research purposes. Don't forget to cite the source of any image that you use.

Courseware

Other than manual copying and reprographic copying for examination purposes, reproducing works of art for educational use can only be done under licence or with the specific consent of the copyright owner(s).

Photocopying and digitisation of artistic works for courseware at UEA is covered by the CLA licences. Slides and OHPs are excluded (but see below). The CLA licence covers both images within a text and those copied separately. In the case of digitisation for courseware, permission is cleared through the CLARCS system and a separate fee is levied. The copyright co-ordinator can advise further.

Copying to slide or OHP for teaching; Slide Collections

This is licensed by the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) and applies only to those UEA schools registered with DACS. These are ART, EAS, and HIST. The DACS licence applies chiefly to slides copied from published reproductions.

Commercially-produced slides sold for teaching use do not have to be licensed, nor do those of original works photographed by UEA personnel with the consent of the artist or the custodian of the work. Other "readymade" slides, typically bought from museums and galleries or supplied in commercially-produced teaching and study kits, can be used for teaching or inclusion in a slide collection provided that the terms of sale or supply permit this; check the small print. Copying of ready-made slides is subject to the express consent of the rights owner or supplier.

Slides made under the DACS licence must be logged. Log-sheets are available from the copyright co-ordinator, to whom the completed sheets should be returned half-yearly (by 30 June and 31 December). The copyright co-ordinator maintains a database of licensed slides. Licence fees are based on the number of new slides made in each half-year, plus a standing charge.
