Digitisation
Before digitising material, other than where this is allowed for private study and research purposes, get permission either through a licensing agency or rights organisation or direct from the rights owner(s). The copyright co-ordinator can do this for you.
- Private study and research. Digital technology can be used to capture material, observing the guidelines issued by the University as to what types of material can be copied and to what extent. Care should be taken to ensure that the resulting file is not accessible over a network or to third parties. It is advisable to store it on a removable disk.
- Courseware. The CLA licence allows published material for which it is an agent to be digitised and networked for teaching and study purposes. Details of the terms and conditions under which this can be done are available from the copyright co-ordinator and on the CLA website. Material to be digitised must first be cleared using the CLARCS system and separate fees will be charged. Both the BGS and OS licences cover the digitisation of their printed products; their terms and conditions are not identical.
The UEA library provides a digitising service to staff who want to make the Library's print resources available via Blackboard to students. Further details about this service can be found on the Digitising teaching materials web page.
Multimedia products
- Using - Multimedia products almost invariably involve a number of copyrights, each of which is determined by the type of work as defined by copyright legislation. The type of each constituent work will influence how it can be exploited, and the product overall will have its own copyright. (Until legislation is updated to take account fully of developments in multimedia, these products will tend to be defined as literary works or databases.)
- Creating - None of the licences held by UEA specifically relate to the creation and dissemination of multimedia products, although those permitting digitisation do in part. Help in identifying the range of copyrights likely to be involved in their production, and requesting permissions, is offered by the copyright co-ordinator.
