The placing of photocopies of copyright-protected material in the Library High Demand (Short Loan) Collection or a school photocopy bank is subject to either
- Section 42 of the UK Copyright Act, 1988, or
- a copyright licence, or
- the formal consent of the copyright owner(s).
Photocopies should be labelled indicating their origin as follows
- copied directly from an original item in Library’s own stock, or
- supplied by another library under Section 42 of the Copyright Act, 1988, or
- supplied copyright fee-paid for High Demand (Short Loan) use by the British Library Document Supply Centre or a similar document supply service, with the original document supply cover sheet attached, or
- otherwise copied with the rights owner’s written consent, with a copy of the consent readily available.
Photocopies supplied by faculty for inclusion in the High Demand (Short Loan) Collection or a departmental photocopy bank should be accompanied by full information as to their source. In particular there should be evidence that consent has been given for such use and, where applicable, for re-copying. In the case of High Demand (Short Loan), faculty are asked to complete a check-list and sign a disclaimer for all photocopies submitted for inclusion in the photocopy collection; where the rights owner's written consent is needed, a copy of it must be supplied.
Replacement copies - If an item in the permanent collections of the University Library has been lost, damaged, or is at risk of damage, it is can be copied wholly or in part as necessary, and the copy can be placed in High Demand (Short Loan), without the rights owner’s formal consent.
Copying photocopies - photocopies held in High Demand (Short Loan) or departmental collections of works covered by the CLA licence can be re-copied, so too can photocopies for which the rights' owner has given permission for re-copying.
