We would like to make you aware that a small percentage of users have reported an issue with Outlook 2010 which we would like to alert the entire community to. The problem appears when an attempt is made to send an email in Outlook 2010 and items remain stuck in the outbox.
Under normal circumstances Outlook would put your email into the ‘Outbox’ folder temporarily before it is actually sent by the system, and then once successfully sent a copy is moved to the ‘Sent Items’ folder.
The problem being experienced by some users appears when mail is sticking in the ‘Outbox’ and has not actually been sent. If this happens and the user restarts Outlook - the mails are deleted from the ‘Outbox’ without being sent, and no copy of the email is stored resulting in a total loss of that message.
Microsoft has not formally recognised the problem as a fault with Outlook 2010, but we are aware from technical forums that other organisations have also been affected by this issue. We are working with Microsoft to identify a solution and are also investigating any instances where this has happened.
If you do see emails stuck in the ‘Outbox’ please do the following:
- Call (#2345) or email (it.helpdesk@uea.ac.uk) to report the problem.
- Individually drag any email items from the ‘Outbox’ onto to your desktop.
- Restart Outlook 2010.
- Drag the emails back from your desktop to your ‘Drafts’ folder. Open the email and send.
- Check that the email has moved from the ‘Outbox’ to the ‘Sent Items’ folder.
By alerting the IT Helpdesk we will be able to assist individuals, and get a better idea regarding the number and type of users being affected by this issue. The more information we can gather, the more this will assist us in determining the cause, and hopefully enable us to implement a solution.
