All the main residences, with the exception of Mary Chapman Court in the city (which has a 100Mbit WAN connection), have dedicated 9 micron single mode fibre connections back to the main computing suite.
Within each residence, Foundry Workgroup Switches (FWS4802s) provide connectivity and are used to rate limit and provide a level of inter-room communication control to prevent the spread of viruses. Projects, such as StudWire, permitted us to install CAT5e cabling into our older residences whereas newer buildings had structured cabling installed from the start. The grouping of these cables and devices is called RESNET, the RESidences NETwork.
These connections are currently set to a (2Mbits download/512k upload) broadband-style connectivity in keeping with current domestic offerings with the additional support of access-control between neighbouring rooms and between residences. There is also a firewall between the residences and both the main campus (UDN) network and the Internet.
