The Microfilm collections are situated on Floor 02 of the Library in the Archives and Special Collections area (left at the bottom of the main staircase). The collections are reference only and are kept in cabinets within rolling stacks in the Microforms room which is open access. Staff assistance is available Mon-Fri 09:30-16:30.
Access to the machines and collections outside of the staffed hours is permissible but readers should be comfortable with using the equipment on their own. Local printing is unavailable when the area is unstaffed.
There is no facility for visitors to use the pc or scanning facility. Visitors may however print to paper (09.30-16.30 Monday - Friday).
Microforms is the generic term for books, periodicals, newspapers, documents, etc. which are recorded in miniaturized form on microfilm (a strip of film), microfiche (a sheet of film, usually the size of a filing card), and occasionally on microcard (an opaque sheet of film, usually the size of a filing card).
All such items are described in the Library Catalogue together with their reference number. Guides to the arrangement can be found on the walls and stack-ends near the microfilm cabinets.
Images may be scanned and saved to the central filestore, a CD-RW or a USB memory stick. The option to use network printing is also available but the image must first be scanned.
Local printing costs 6p per page and is paid for with cash at Archives and LaRC Reception. Local printing is only available from 09.30-16.30 Monday-Friday.
Booking is not essential but if you would like to reserve a microfilm reader/printer for a specific time during 09.30-16.30 Monday-Friday please contact Archives and LaRC Reception on Floor 02 : extension 3491 (external callers: 01603 593491), archives@uea.ac.uk
