GENERAL INFORMATION:

Where is the LaRC and when is it open?
The LaRC is situated on Floor 02 of the Library building. Opening hours are 09.30-16.30, Monday-Friday.

Can I use the LaRC?
The LaRC is open to all staff and research postgraduates at UEA. Users are welcome to borrow materials from the collection, use the IT resources, coffee area, surf room, and book the use of the iLab. CSED and ISD staff may also book the use of the LaRC2 room.

Is there any support for users of the  LaRC?
The LaRC has dedicated members of staff based at the Reception Desk on Floor 02 of the Library who will be happy to provide help and guidance with any of the facilities and resources within the LaRC.

What training courses/materials are available?
The LaRC holds many CD/DVD based training materials within the collection which can be borrowed or used within the LaRC. IT training courses are held in the CSED IT Training Room located within the LaRC. Details of training courses can be found on the CSED website.

LaRC COLLECTION:

What resources do you hold?
The LaRC Collection contains books, videos, DVDs and open learning materials categorised under the following headings: learning and teaching; management; personal and professional development and information technology.

Who can borrow resources from the  LaRC?
Staff and research postgraduates can borrow items from the collection.

How can I borrow the resources?
All resources are located within the Learning and Resources Centre. Please take items to be borrowed to the self-issue terminals on Floor 0.

How may items can I borrow?
Staff and research postgraduates can borrow 10 items, this is in addition to their Main Library entitlement.

How long can I keep the resources for?
Books are issued for 4-weeks, video and DVDs and open learning materials for 2 weeks. All resources can be renewed twice.

Can I use my laptop in the LaRC?
Yes. Laptops can be used in the Surf Room which is situated to the rear of the LaRC.

IT RESOURCES:

What materials can I scan?
The LaRC has 3 scanners which will scan text and images (including OCR software). Instructions are provided by each machine and advice is available at LaRC Reception.

What multimedia resources are available?
A dedicated multimedia machine (Apple iMac) is available. In addition to Microsoft office applications, a graphics tablet and a scanner, the following software packages are available on this machine:

  • iMovie
  • iPhoto
  • Adobe Photoshop 7
  • Macromedia Director MX
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver MX
  • Macromedia Fireworks MX
  • Macromedia Flash MX

A TV-video combi unit is available to watch videos from the collection. DVDs can be viewed and screen shots captured using any of the workstations. Equipment to copy VHS to DVD and a tape cassette player is available to listen to tapes within the collection. Headphones are available to borrow from the LaRC Reception Desk.

Can I book to use the facilities in advance?
The TV-video combi unit, the VHS to DVD copying equipment and tape cassette player can be booked in advance. To book please contact LaRC Reception on Ext. 3483 or email larc@uea.ac.uk.

What is ICARUS and when is it available?
ICARUS is a weekly drop-in service offering advice on statistics and SPSS to staff and research postgraduates.  It operates during term time on Wednesdays between 12:30pm and 2:00pm. The sessions are held in the IT area of the LaRC.

Is food permitted in the IT area of LaRC?
Food and drink (except water) should not be consumed in the IT area of the LaRC. The LaRC provides a coffee area where users are welcome to eat and drink.

iLab:

Can I book the iLab?
All staff and research postgraduates can book the iLab. The iLab is also available for hire by external organisations.

How do I book?
To book the iLab contact LaRC Reception on ext. 3483 (01603 593483) or email larc@uea.ac.uk with details of the date(s), times and equipment required. You can also book the iLab online via our bookings page.

What facilities are available?
The iLab houses 17 networked laptops, an interactive whiteboard, DVD, VHS and data projection facilities. The walls are floor to ceiling whiteboard.

Is there a charge for the use of the space?
The iLab is free to use by UEA staff and research postgraduates. External organisations can hire the iLab, for details of charges please contact LaRC Reception on 01603 593483 or email larc@uea.ac.uk.

Do you provide catering facilities?
A coffee machine is available within the LaRC. The LaRC will organise catering for bookings made by external organisations. UEA staff should order any catering requirements directly with Catering Services.

LaRC2:

Can I book LaRC2?
Bookings for LaRC2 can only be taken from CSED and ISD members of staff. LaRC2 can also be used as an additional space/breakout room for groups booking the iLab facilitated service.

How do I book?
To book the LaRC2 contact LaRC Reception on ext. 3483 or email larc@uea.ac.uk with details of the date(s) and times required. You can also book the LaRC2 online via our bookings page.

What facilities are available?
A PC, data projector, DVD player, Video player and network points are available (cables for which are also provided). Users are welcome to bring their own laptops. The walls are floor to ceiling whiteboard. The desks can be arranged to suit the purpose of the booking.

How many people can LaRC2 accommodate?
LaRC2 can accommodate 20 people.

Is there a charge for the use of the space?
LaRC2 is free for use by CSED and ISD members of staff. UEA groups and external organisations booking the iLab facilitated service can also use LaRC2. There will be a charge for external organisations, for details please contact LaRC Reception on 01603 593483 or email larc@uea.ac.uk.

Do you provide catering facilities?
A coffee machine is available within the LaRC. The LaRC will organise catering for bookings made by external organisations. UEA staff should order any catering requirements directly with Catering Services.
