Additional IT Facilities

The additional computer facilities are located near the IT Helpdesk in Library Floor 0 and are available for staff and students.

There are some PCs in the area dedicated to special functions. These systems need to be booked at the helpdesk. Each session is a maximum of two hours. No payment is required.
 

Scanning 
Two colour scanners are available for scanning images. One also has an automatic document feeder and software for text recognition. You need to book to use the scanners.
 

Data Storage
There are currently three CD-writer drives. One dedicated CD-writer PC and both scanner workstations have CD-writer drives. USB front facing ports are available on all machines. You need to book to use these PCs.

Facilities for Visually Impaired Users
There is a PC with a large monitor and a scanner. The software on this machine includes
‘Jaws’ Screen Reader: the most popular screen reader worldwide. JAWS also outputs to refreshable Braille displays.
Zoom Text' is a screen magnifier, designed to help users with vision impairments.
‘Kurzweil Software' Kurzweil 1000 is a scanning, reading and writing software program for use by people who are blind or visually impaired.
CCTV Video Magnification – Print enhancement for visually impaired users.

Read and Write (formerly called textHelp)
This is designed to support the needs of students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties. It gives help with homophones (words like ‘there’ and ‘their’), has contextual word prediction feature, a spell checker from which suggested corrections can be spoken and has voice output to enable passages of text to be read out to the user.

Accessibility Options
WINDOWS XP offer a range of tweaks to help users with vision, hearing and mobility impairments use Windows XP more easily. The Accessibility Wizard asks you questions about your accessibility needs. Based on your answers, it configures utilities and settings for you.
