From 1st April 2010, there is a change of University policy regarding the deposit of your thesis
From that date you will be able to deposit either two hard bound copies of your thesis or one hard copy and one electronic copy. The electronic copy will be instead of the Library copy and will be held in UEA's central repository.
Whichever formats you choose, the research degree will not be awarded until you have deposited two complete and readable copies of the final approved and accepted thesis with your Faculty Postgraduate Research Office.
E-theses: Frequently asked questions
All the information you need about preparing and depositing an electronic version of your thesis should be available on this site. Below are some of the most commonly asked questions relating to the process:
Do I still need to hand in two bound copies of my thesis?
No. From April 2010 students will be able to submit either two hard bound copies or one printed and one electronic copy of their thesis. You will still need to submit two soft bound copies for examination purposes.
Why should I deposit an electronic copy of my thesis?
Online access makes your thesis available free of charge to a global audience and will make it available to researchers across the world raising the profile of your research. Depositing electronically will also save you all the costs of printing and binding your thesis.
How do I deposit my thesis?
You will need to complete a signed Research Degree Entry Form and return it to your Faculty Postgraduate Research Office together with either two bound copies of your theses or one bound copy and one electronic copy in PDF format on a CD, DVD or USB flash drive. The entry form will apply to both the hard copy and electronic copy of your thesis.
How will people find theses held by UEA Library?
UEA’s repository (https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/) will hold the theses and this can be searched locally, but is also harvested by major search engines. EThOS, a UK wide thesis service has recently been developed, and this will harvest from UEA's repository*.
What format does my thesis need to be in?
The electronic copy should be submitted as one file in PDF format on a CD, DVD or USB flash drive. You may include Excel or other additional data files if appropriate. The electronic copy must be submitted at the same time as the final version of the printed copy and should be identical to the printed version.
Will you return my disc or flash drive?
No, I’m afraid that we will not be able to return the disc or flash drive to you.
What should I name my file?
The file should be saved in the following way: Yearlastnameinitialsdegree.pdf
e.g. 2010BloggsJBPhD.pdf
Do I need to label my CD, DVD or memory stick?
Yes, your name, school and thesis title should be detailed.
How do I convert my thesis to PDF format?

Do I have to provide an electronic version of my thesis?
No, if you do not want to provide an electronic copy of your thesis, you are not obliged to, but if you decide to digitize your thesis at a later date, all digitization costs will be passed on to you.
My thesis is subject to commercial or confidentiality restrictions, what shall I do?
If your thesis is under embargo, you can choose not to deposit your thesis electronically. Alternatively your deposited e-thesis can be deposited but will be marked as embargoed and it will not be made available in UEA’s repository or via EthOS until the end of the restricted period.
